Shanahan Trail area

I have had quite a few barefoot experiences since I last posted just over a month ago. I have had some of my first barefoot walks and hikes with others: short walks with my parents, a hike up to see fireworks with my friend Blake, spending much of a camping trip at Fulford Cave barefoot. That might be a topic for an upcoming post. Right now, I want to give an update on my last walk in the Boulder foothills, which started up Shanahan trail.

This is the route I walked on Sunday. The numbers mark the distance from the beginning in kilometers.

Saddle Rock

On Tuesday morning, I biked up to the Gregory Canyon trailhead in the Chatauqua park area, and I walked up to Saddle Rock along its eponymous trail. The rock is at 7000 feet, and I climbed 1200 feet to get there over 2 km. This puts it over my distance for the Sanitas Valley trail, and it is definitely much steeper. I took my time and enjoyed myself, taking an extended break up on the rock with a view of the continental divide.

Challenging my Endurance

I ran eastward on the Boulder Creek path this morning. I decided to run out until somewhere around 3 or 4 km from home, turn back, and push myself to do as much of the return trip as possible. A flooded section turned me around just before 55th Street, which is actually at 4.8 km, and I managed to keep running all the way back home, for a total of 9.6 km.

Sanitas Valley Trail

Back on 25 May, I walked up the Sanitas Valley Trail. I mentioned it in my post about making bike pedal pads. I was busy after that walk, so I did not write about it immediately, but I did take some pictures that might be worth sharing. Continue reading

Cherry Creek path run

I was at my boyfriend’s place in downtown Denver this morning. He tends to sleep in the mornings, and I usually feel energized by the morning light streaming in the window, so sometimes I get out and do things while I let him sleep in. One of the perks of running barefoot is that my running shoes are always with me, so today I decided to go for a run.

Back up to 5 km running range!

Lately, I have been taking it easy on running. I noticed some sharper pain creeping in on my left foot at first, which seemed to sort of wrap around the inside ankle and under my foot. Something similar popped up in my right foot as well. At first I assumed I must have stressed something by trying to run to trailheads, do some trail walking, and run back. I always prioritize avoiding injury and letting my body recover at its own pace, so for a while my maximum running range has been 3 km, and most of my runs have been less than half that.

Anemone Trail

In my first post, I mentioned my walk up the Anemone Trail on Sunday. Checking with Google Maps Pedometer, the total round trip turned out to be just under 5 miles, with about 1.3 miles on unpaved trails. Continue reading
